La Vague Basque

La Vague Basque is a surf school and surf shop at Boulevard du Prince de Galles in Biarritz, focused on learning, improving and becoming more independent in the ocean. Its programme covers group lessons, private coaching, multi-day surf stages, a club format and stand-up paddle sessions. Group and private teaching are available in several formats, with options for individual participants, small groups and organised groups.

The school places practical time in the water at the centre of its sessions. Instructors remain in the ocean with participants, offering guidance and technical advice while helping each person progress. The teaching also includes an understanding of the marine environment, so the experience is not limited to practising on a board. The stated aim of the longer stages is to help participants gain confidence and autonomy while learning more about how the ocean works.

Lessons are led by state-qualified instructors, and equipment is supplied across the principal course formats. Collective sessions include a board and wetsuit, while private lessons and stages include the necessary equipment and insurance. Families are catered for through a dedicated “Jardin des Vagues” format for children aged five to nine. These sessions are shorter than the standard group lessons and are offered during July and August. Older participants can choose from one-off lessons, private coaching or stages lasting three or five days. The intensive stage adds two daily surf sessions over five days, subject to availability.

The club format provides ten surf sessions during the lower-season period, while group enquiries can be arranged for seminars, organisations, incentive programmes, local authorities and celebratory group outings. Stand-up paddle is also available as a coached activity, using the same small-group and private-lesson structure.
